Kevin Kepple’s (b. 1971) art tows the line between painting and sculpture. He experiments with different media, deconstructing the art-making process and developing new methods to push artistic boundaries. Kepple mixes glue, handmade ink, and varnish to create a gel that he drizzles, or draws, in looping forms layered on top of one another. The finished artwork reveals a corporeality that recalls cells and skeletal structures. His finished artworks are richly textured, luminescent, abstract paintings. As Kepple’s mastery over his medium has increased, his works have become stripped down, with fewer colors and more condensed layers. His lacy, circular forms appear random and static at first, but reveal a sense of fluidity upon closer analysis. This evocation of controlled chaos is in keeping with traditions of abstract expressionism. Kepple is a Washington DC-based artist who grew up in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania.
